MindManager 9
Mindjet will be launching MindManager 9 on August 9th. I’ve played a bit with a pre-release copy along with beta upgrades to ResultsManager and GyroQ and the tools from this site (MindReader, Mark Task Complete, etc) seem to be working fine with it. Production releases of the Gyronix tools typically lag the release by a few days as they have to finalize their testing. Contact Nick if you want to test the betas.
OutLinker needs to point to the new type library, which you can do manually or just run the new installer for v9.
I’ll be away from my computer until later in August, so if your system is working for you, you might want to hold off on the upgrade for a few weeks.

I am interested in the map on your page:
http://www.activityowner.com/2010/07/31/mindmanager-9/
What tool are you using to “publish” a viewable, clickable and viewing text?
A VERY weak aspect of Mindjet is the inability to publish a map to MY website.
I find their PDF approach NOT usable.
Thanks,

Jalong — Thanks — always rewarding to know that my trips down the macro-writing rabbit hole have yielded benefit for others :-).
Bob — To create that map, I use “Export as web page” and then use “clickable image map” as the template. I go in and snip out the subset of the generated html that I need to embed inside the blog.

Hi AO,
Nick Duffill had reported some instability with the start up of MM9. Have you noticed this at all? Mindjet are also claiming MM9 uses less resources on your computer, again do you have any comments?
Thanks
Chris

Nick had mentioned that in early versions there was an issue if you had GyroQ launch MindManager for you, but that seems fine now. The first version I tested had a problem when refreshing existing dashboards, but seems OK with latest pre-release.
V9 opens maps faster, but I don’t know if that translates to faster dashboard regeneration. I had a very large map that opens in 15sec in v9. Under v8 it appears to open in a few seconds, but I can’t interact with it until 30sec have passed.
Some have noted that v8 has baseline CPU usage that is concerning in a tablet/notebook situation. V9 fixes this as I understand it.

Dear activityowner,
I use the Agendaitem tag a lot. its easy to have an owner an a duedate filled in right away. in MM8, when sending it to de daily capture map it grouped items to the same owner.
Now I am using MM9 with the latest gyroq and RM versions.
the tag sends it to the daily capture map, but it doesn’t group it anymore by person.
Do you have any idea what goes wrong?
thanks in advance rene corjanus

I’m running MM9 and RM latest release but when I generate dashboards any action items with owners other than me don’t show up. have you seen this at all?

Hi Rob — Does it happen on a particular dashboard?
Hi Rene — Which agenda item tag are you referring to? It is not one I developed or used I don’t think. There is a user contributed tag in the library but maybe you are using one from Gyronix? If you could send me the code or packed text for the tag I can have a look at it.

@ admin
Sorry I didn’t see you reply sooner.
I refer tot the user contributed tag in the gyroq wiki.

Tag called ai.
Is this enough or do you really want the code copied in?

Hi AO,
I found a problem with RM in Mindjet 9 about due date, start date & duration. I found that if I set both start and due date for a task, Mindjet 9 force to set duration too. Then I can’t remove just only start or due date or duration. All 3 fields have to be removed together.
This also causes the error when RM create “Projects by Target Week” Dashboard: all the project/subproject has both start date and due date (and ofcourse duration) in the dash board is not right.
For example, my Project “ABC” has start date 1/9/2010 (in next month), due date 30/9/2010 can be place in “Due week commencing 30 August, 2010″.
Another problem is, the Project ABC still appear in daily action dash board in ” My Committed Projects needing Next Actions” right now, but I want it to show only from 1/9/2010.
I have cleared the duration of Project ABC using mindjet 8, then run the dashboard again in Mindjet 9, and everything seems to be OK. So I guess duration is the cause of that problem.
Do you have any idea about solving this problem? Have to come back to Mindjet 8 because of that is not interesting, but I tend to do if I can’t find the solution. However, the Gantt view in Minjet 9 is very good, and I feel regret to leave it.
Thank u very much for your help. Your work in this blog is so impressive!!!

Hix, I have a mistake in the above example of Project ABC. I mean my project “ABC” start date is 20/9/2010, instead of 1/9/2010.
So I re-type the example:
“For example, my Project “ABC” has start date 20/9/2010 (in next month), due date 30/9/2010 can be place in “Due week commencing 30 August, 2010″.
Another problem is, the Project ABC still appear in daily action dash board in ” My Committed Projects needing Next Actions” right now, but I want it to show only from 20/9/2010″
And in my clock, “now”, is ofcourse 24/8/2010
I’m sorry :P

And this is another problem: after I use “put it in the front door” with mindjet 9, RM 2.9.1 & GyroQ 2.1 (newest), there always have many stuffs in GyroQ’s queue (about 50 – 70). If I click “Send queue”, it show a message that many stuff didn’t have their tag, and ask if I want to process it.
If choose ‘yes’, it show a line \=============================\ in the gyroQ input field, and then something like the text in my ‘rfd.txt’.
If choose ‘no’, nothing happens, I still have many stuffs in gyroQ’s queue that not have ther tag yet.
It causes problem that I can loose my queue item, or have to take time to process almost hundred rubbish stuff!
Please help!

Hello Xiahung — I will need to look more closely at the gyroq issue, but the date issue you describe is due to a RM setting. You need to uncheck the option for “Support MM/Outlook Syncronization” in the ResultsManager options. In order to do a conventional syncronization with outlook, RM requires that if you must have both a start and end date or neither.
Xiahung said,
August 24, 2010 @ 11:03 am
Oh, thank u for the super fast reply. I have unchecked the option “Support MM/Outlook…” in Mindjet 8. In Mindjet 9, this field become grey & I can’t check or uncheck it.
But why it is OK when I just open my Project ABC map by Mindjet 8, clear all the duration, and then run the dashboard again even in Mindjet 9 with RM 2.91?
Because of that result, I think it may be something wrong in how RM get the value of field ‘due date’ in Mindjet 9.
What do you think. Thanks for you help again.
Xiahung said,
August 24, 2010 @ 11:08 am
One more thing. Now I uninstalled RM 2.91 & GyroQ 2.1 in Mindjet 9 and reinstall those for Mindjet 8. I also keep Mindjet 9 to evaluate.
But when I use tag ‘o’ and want to open a map, gyroQ will open it in Mindjet 9. How can I configure GyroQ or Mindreader to alway open it in Mindjet 8?
Sorry for taking your time. However, I will always appreciate your opinion so much!
ActivityOwner said,

Hi Xiahung — I don’t have MM9 installed on my home system yet so it might have to wait until the weekend before I can look at the issues you mention. I initially hadn’t read it carefully and hoped it might be related to the synchronization option.
It sounds like with v9 and incorporation of Gantt chart functionality there is changes to handling of duration. I usually don’t set that. It could be that RM is trying to be “safe” and interpreting duration information as requiring you to start sooner than you think you need to. I will try testing on my v9 system this weekend.
re: GyroQ
I’m not sure what is happening here. Can you let me know what is the error message exactly? (I don’t recognize “doesn’t have their tag”. Sometimes a glitch can occur in one entry that will cause the queue to not unload fully and each time you attempt it will unload the same entries prior to the issue. In those cases you need to go into the GyroQ queue text file and edit out the problem entry so that you can get the subsequent ones to unload. The file is located in the My Maps\GyroQ directory. A problem can occur for example if you add a ” character to an entry as this confuses MindReader
re: V8/V9
The Windows operating system will associate the request to open a mmap file with the last program you installed. For example if you doubleclick on a map file, I think it will probably open in MM9. If you want to have both MM8 and MM9 installed, but work in MM8, I think you might need to reinstall MM8. Perhaps you could also solve this by clicking right on a map file and choosing which application you want to open it by default. If you reinstall GyroQ, you might be able to tell it where you want it to direct its output to.
ActivityOwner said,

Hi Rene — Thanks for clarification on agenda item tag. I had never actually given it a try until you reported this issue as my tag entries are usually full with my own set.
The tag on the wiki actually sends items to an “Agenda item.mmap” file rather than the daily capture map. I don’t know if I had tested it originally. I’m finding the problem you describe under v8 with GyroQ 2.0.2.2. It seems the select/create sequence isn’t recognizing existing entries correctly. Its possible a change slipped into GyroQ or that the _temp_ variable suddenly can’t be used the way it was previously. I sent Gyronix a message on the question.

Hello everyone – we have just posted some detail about the behaviour of dates in MindManager 9. This is causing some problems with ResultsManager.
Regarding the “untagged item” issue with GyroQ, there was a change in the latest version which may mean it has difficulties with lines in buffer files that do not contain a whole command sequence, e.g. just contain a comment. If you can send the script we can check it out.
Running a repair on the MindManager 8 installation should be enough to make it the default with GyroQ. Selecting the GyroQ version at install time only defines which version of MindManager the installer adds the GyroQ menu commands to. If the MindManager version is not made explicit in tags, then it will default to the last installed version.

I posted a new entry on the version 9 date issue and included the full text of Nick’s Yahoo message there:
http://www.activityowner.com/2010/08/25/mindmanager-9-task-date-issue/
The Put it in front of the door “rfd.txt” script is actually the only script where I’ve included a lot of comments so Nick’s comments makes sense. I recently reimaged my hard drive and hadn’t started using it again with latest software. I will look to created an uncommented version that may fix the issue.
I feel like I need to run a “meeting next actions” dashboard on the comment threads above. Here’s my summary:
AO:
* Investigate issues with “Agenda Items” tag
* Uncomment rfd.txt script
Xiahung
* Run MindManager 8 repair installation
Rob
* Let me know what dashboard you are seeing the lack of action items with
All
* Let Mindjet customer service know that getting this issue addressed is a priority for you.

OK — I’ve got my action items done. By trial and error I modified the agenda items tag so that it works correctly. I also posted an “uncommented” version of rfd.txt to the wiki. New next action dashboard:
Xiahung
* Run MM8 repair installation
* Text new rfd.txt from wiki
Rene
* Text new agenda item tag
Rob
* let me know what dashboard you are having issue with
All
* Ask Mindjet to fix duration/start/due date issue to enable RM compatibility

AO, how nice you are. You ‘re so intelligent, and are one of the most effective & kind-hearted man I’ve ever seen.
I’ve just recently do my next action that ‘I owe AO’ above :D It solved my problem!!!
Everything seems to be OK now, GyroQ and v8/v9 problem, except 1 more thing :P
When I use the new rfd.txt, I see that it include the code that using ao_send_branch.mmap.
I fill in the box as following:
1. Enter your SMTP -> smtp.googlemail.com
2. Enter from address for outgoing email -> myemail@gmail.com
3. Enter to address for outgoing email -> myemail@gmail.com (I want to email to myself)
4. Enter port to use (25 typical, 465 for gmail) ->465
5. Enter your userid -> myemail@gmail.com
6. Enter your password -> myemail@gmail.com‘s password
After that, there will be error “(10525) function terminated during evaluation”, and the yellow arrow stop at ” .Item(schema & “smtpserverport”) = Eval(getattribute(“serverport”,configdoc))”
(I run directly the ao_send_branch.mmbas to see that error)
If I run the mna tag, the error is “The sequence {map:open:dashboard……………run:macro:ao\ao_send_branch_by_subtopic.mmbas} return an error:
Message from Mindmmanager 8:
A runtime error occured while executing the macro
C:\User\…..ao\ao_send_branch_by_subtopic.mmbas.
I use Outlook with myemail@gmail.com, too. And it ‘s OK with the smtp.googlemail.com. I don’t know why it occur with this. Please help!
I had this problem long time ago, so I have had to use the basic rfd.txt – without ao_send_branch.mmap to prevent that. I was too shy to ask you here at that point of time, until I see how fast & wonderful replies of you.
What I really want to say is, AO, thank u so much.

Hi Xiahung — For outgoing mail address you want to use smtp.googlemail.com (or smtp.gmail.com) not your email address.
I personally use my own Internet service provider’s smtp for outgoing mail as that was easier to set up. I should probably get it fully worked out for gmail as that is a more generic solution for people. You might find more comments on gettting gmail set up in the blog archives.
Thank you for your complements. I ran and showed my wife :-).

Hello,
As always thank you, thank you, thank you for the effort and work you have put into developing these tools, such a great benefit to helping me manage workflows!
One of the key tools I use is Outlinker to process my emails and get them into MM. Outlinker has been working great for me, even with the installment of MM9 (with MM8 still on my system). However, a couple of weeks ago Outlinker stopped working on both my home and work PC’s. I’m not exactly sure what I did to cause this, but I think it happened when I uninstalled MM8 after I decided I was happy with MM9. When I try to use Outlinker now, nothing happens. I’ve tried to troubleshoot the macro by using the ‘step into’ option inside Outlook and when I do that I get the error message “Compile Error, User defined type not detected” and the following line in the macro is highlighted “Function getmindmanagerobject () as mindmanager.application”
I’ve tried to re-install Outlinker with the latest version and that hasn’t worked. I’ve tried deleting the macro from within Outlook and reinstalling Outlinker and still no luck. Any suggestions?
Thanks again, your help and time on this is greatly appreciated!!!!!

Hi Scott — thanks for the kind words. I am so happy this stuff continues to get used.
Did you install the “MM9 version” of outlinker from here:
http://outlinker.com/installation-and-configuration/
The problem sounds like the type library is missing based on the error and when it became a problem. That should be set correctly the MM9 install but perhaps it is not. I had to build it with both MM8 and MM9 installed. I’m on MM8 at the moment.
Can you try the following — inside the macro editor click on “Tools, References” and make sure MindManager 9 type library is checked?
